Language, genetics and gender. Today in Radio in Colour we turn our gaze on the language of politicians, the work of scientists and the struggles of activists in the 1990s. Brisbane experimental musician Robert Davidson talks about turning politics into music, from Keating to Howard. We also hear from a scientist who began her career as a zoologist in the 1990s, who reflects on how things have changed since the Human Genome Project, the rise of science communication, and 21st century exploration in Australia. And while there is nothing new under the sun, everything under the sun is still subject to scientific theories and social change. So too in Queensland in the 1990s, where social attitudes were slowly expanding the notion of human sexuality and gender. Norms and attitudes are slow to change, and in the 1990s non-conformists struggled to fit in. From being gay and black, to the story of a woman who changed the rules for transgender people in Queensland, tune in from 9 am to 102.1 fm.
