Creativity, for First Nations people, is a fundamental part of our unique and ancient way of storytelling. Colonisation impacted our way of expression, stripping our rights to practice our creativity in this way. In recent times, there has been a reclaiming of culture, language, song and dance in a way that is healing for our ancestors, elders and the next generation. We believe sharing our experiences and stories is the ultimate form of courage.” 

For The First Creatives first full-length production, a multidisciplinary, intergenerational cast of First Nations’ women share stories of colonial violence, dispossession, abuse, motherhood, blak joy, connection, country and healing, woven together with song, dance and video.

The show will feature performances by The First Creatives founders, dancers Allirah and Maddy Fisher, and guest performances by Githabul, Migunberri- Yugumbeh poet and musician Alinta McGrady “BADASSMUTHA”, Kabi Kabi and Kuku Yalanji Aunty Sharyn Malone, Gooreng Gooreng, Kabi Kabi Aunty Chantay Link and more. The work brings together diverse creative expressions to inspire and sustain traditional healing practices and inspire future generations to stand strong in their identity and truth. The production’s title, Ya’Djin, meaning ‘speak’, echoes a message of resistance and courage from the artists, inviting the community to speak up and fend off any pressure to remain silent.

This week I travelled to brunswick heads to attend a fundraiser at the picture for riasing awareness, funds and community spirit in order to attempt to save Country from development, listen in as we get to hear from 23yo Aboriginal film creator Jarvis Loveday on his new documentary Save Wullum which you can watch and share here: Help us save Wallum our Sacred land home to threatened Australian species (youtube.com) 

"This is a really important issue that is happening in our local town within the Byron Shire. Save Wallum is a community campaign working to save the Wallum of Brunswick Heads from destruction. Our Wallum is a place that provides habitat for 24 threatened species, rare wildflowers and old-growth trees, as they interweave the ecology of this coastal landscape and Simpsons Creek and the Cape Byron Marine Park. I have been camping and fishing here all my life, and our people thousands of years before us did the same. Passed-on stories tell us this land surrounding the Simpsons river is very sacred, and to lose another meaningful site in the Byron Shire will be devastating to our local culture.

Ater a busy week with Clients, friends and loved ones I am reminded of the sheer disparities, isolation and hardships thats CARERS face, from Mothers in 4 walls with newborns and small children, to those caring for children and loved ones with diasbilities. Community support seems the most viable way forward, that and Reverence for all, especially for "inner knowing".
