History of Words: A curated selection

This Sunday, we are taking a step back into the world of late-night spiralling research binges!

This week I was drawn into the wonderfully chaotic world of words, specifically, their layered history.

Most of the words we use today once had completely different meanings, and that history is absolutely bonkers!

So that’s what Sunday’s show is all about: a select few words, their history, and what they used to mean!

This week on I Promise I Am Not Crazy, I had the pleasure of chatting with the founder of Distrosub, Lincoln Savage —a music streaming platform focused on supporting artists.

We talked all things Distrosub: what inspired the platform, the current state of streaming, the music industry as a whole, the challenges of building something from the ground up, and plenty more along the way.

Last week, we kicked off my conversation with Dr Matthew Cipa, Convenor of the Film & TV Major at UQ.

This Sunday, we bring that conversation to a close with Part 2—the final instalment of our special two-part interview.

From Dr Cipa's book Is Harpo Free? And other questions of the metaphysical screen, to film, television, the philosophical, and the downright hysterical, we wrap up a conversation that wandered through big ideas, memorable stories, and plenty of laughs along the way.

Female Monsters: Lamashtu, Lamia & Yuki-Onna

This week, we’re going back to the roots of I Promise I Am Not Crazy — history, mythology, monsters, and me asking far too many questions about all of it.

Because yes, female monsters are terrifying...

But what can they tell us about the societies that imagined them?

This Sunday, we’re travelling from the ancient cities of Mesopotamia to the myths of Greece and the snowy landscapes of Japan to meet:

LAMASHTU — an ancient Mesopotamian figure feared as a threat to pregnant women, mothers and infants.

LAMIA — a queen transformed by loss into one of Greek tradition’s most enduring monsters.

YUKI-ONNA — Japan’s mysterious Snow Woman: beautiful, deadly, and far more complicated than a simple villain.

Three cultures. Thousands of years of storytelling. And three very different monsters shaped by fears of loss, grief, nature, death and the unknown.

Because monsters don’t just tell us what people feared.

Sometimes, they tell us something about the people doing the fearing.

History remembers the names. Sometimes it forgets who did the work.

This week on I Promise I Am Not Crazy, we're looking at three extraordinary women whose discoveries, inventions, and contributions changed lives, industries, and history.

Alice Ball developed a groundbreaking treatment for Hansen's disease. Elizabeth Magie created the game that would become Monopoly.

Trotula of Salerno pioneered women's health centuries before many believed women belonged in medicine at all.
