Our story

Since 1978 4ZZZ has continually presented programs in support of the broader queer identifying community. On 30th September 1992 the weekly lesbian and gay program "Gay Waves" changed in both format and name. It became a cycle every three weeks (Wednesdays 6-9pm) of "Queer Radio" for men, "Queer Radio" for LGBT's and "The Lesbian Show" by and for women. The Queer Radio shows were to be magazine style, dealing with specific topics and invited guests. The Lesbian Show changed its name to Dykes On Mykes in the mid-90's. 4ZZZ allocated each show a weekly 2 hour slot in August 2002.

In November 2013, Queer Radio was both surprised and deeply humbled to be chosen by an independent panel of judges to win the CAN Awards 2013 Media Award. The Community Action Network Awards were first introduced in 1997 to recognize achievement that is positive and makes a difference in the inner city areas of Brisbane. Coordinated by the New Farm Neighbourhood Centre, the award citation reads "For excellence in journalism/social media which promotes the social inclusion and equality for all". 

At the 53rd Annual Queen's Birthday Ball & Community Awards, presented by the Brisbane Pride Festival on June 8th 2014, Blair Martin (he/they) was given the Lifetime Achievment Award for his 20 plus years of dedication, commitment and passion in serving the Brisbane LGBTQIPA /DiGS Community, and has been nominated in the Media Personality category of those awards from 2014 to 2019

Blair was also  nominated in the "LGBTI Broadcaster and Presenter" category for the inaugural Australian LBGTI Awards 2017.

At the 65th Annual Queens Ball & Community Awards in 2026, Brody (they/them) was awarded Volunteer of the Year and also was one of the two PROUD Award recipients (for outstanding service to the community)

QUEERIE: What Queer Radio memories do you have?
 
For the 34th birthday show - and on the exact date (Sep 30) as well, there is a special lineup of old friends and new ones too.
 
Steven Fergusson was a part of Queer Radio from 2003 - 2006, returns to the show to meet the "new" people hosting the program now and share memories of 20 to 25 years ago.
 
The Meanjin/Brisbane celebrations for Intl Non Binary Day (which is in July but... things....) is on this Sunday and Brody chats with Jade from the organisers
 
Now definitely "old friends' THE GEMINIIS, Swan and Simon, wanted to party with the team - and to quietly mention they are performing at the coming MELT Festival at the end of October
 
And lastly - one of the show's oldest friends is Dirty Versachi who has been part of Queer Radio in various artistic and musical forms for nearly 14 or more years. They have a brand new single out today - "Show Me How Big" with LA based rapper and fellow ENBY artist, Figgy Baby.

It's been 40 years since Australian playwright Michael Gow's now classic Australian play AWAY was first produced and the Brisbane Arts Theatre are honouring that milestone with a new production (pictured) opening this weekend at the Norman Price Theatre, TAFE Qld South Bank Campus. In tonight's second hour, the team has a chance to chat with Associate Director of the production Peter Norton 

The Brisbane Pride Festival has it's official launch this Saturday, September 26 and regular BPF visitor Jacob Harland wants you to know all there is to know, along with the list of organisations who have benefited from this year's BPF Grant Allocations in the first half hour of tonight's show.

And it's Bi+ Visibility Day today with a few tunes to up the representation for the bisexual part of the broad diverse in gender and sexuality community.

Launching this Friday is the latest single from Australia's Yodeling Drag Queen superstar - LayDee KinMee - "You're Not A Lover" is a stomping track that blends alt.country with dance floor vibes - and a killer lyric. Things will be AOK this Saturday for local alt dreampop/trip hop band Opaque Space who launch their long awaited album "Pronoia" at The Cave Inn this Saturday, and the team welcome Victoria Anderson to the show this evening.

One of the BIGGEST sporting events to happen in Meanjin/Brisbane starts tomorrow - the 2026 Bingham Cup and Amanda Mark Cup - International Gay Rugby's two premier international competitions where 50 teams (43 in the men's Bingham Cup and 7 in the women's Amanda Mark Cup) have descended on the city for the biennial celebration of sport and community. Queer Radio host Blair Martin had an in-depth conversation with Jason Garrick from the Brisbane Hustlers (the host club) and president of the Bingham Cup 2026 committee and Quinton Leduc, chair of International Gay Rugby the official body overseeing both competitions.
