Radio Reversal is a show that subjects aspects of everyday life to historico-political, theoretical, cheeky, irreverent, high brow, low brow, eye brow, warm-hearted analysis. Our aim is to see the world more clearly, think about what we'd like it to become, and how we can make that happen. We think that discussing these sorts of ideas is one way to lessen the alienation that affects many of us trying to make sense of a world that so often makes no sense of us. We also play loads of awesome music (sometimes thematic!) with great enthusiasm for requests and an emphasis on supporting local artists. It's fun!

Reflections on legal action for human rights with Sam Tracy from Basic Rights Queensland

Good morning Zed-legends! It’s Marissa in the studio today, bringing you an interview with Sam Tracy, Practice Director at Basic Rights Queensland, a community legal centre that works on human rights, discrimination and poverty-related laws. Sam discusses a recent win on behalf of homeless clients in the Supreme Court in the case of Bobeldyk and Anor v Moreton Bay City Council; Eichin & Ors v Moreton Bay City Council [2026] QSC 27. While the decision sadly does not stop Council’s from enforcing laws to move people on and destroy their belongings, it’s a starting point for thinking about the role of lawyers and the legal system in this moment.

In this conversation, Sam also discusses some proposed legislation to further expand police powers to ban people from prescribed public places. Alongside the recent laws banning pro-Palestine speech and the arrests at protests over the weekend, these laws represent a concerning trend to control how people use and exist in public places. As always, this is a reminder that struggles for justice on stolen First Nations land are interconnected and necessarily anti-colonial, anti-racist and anti-capitalist.

Don’t forget it’s April Atonement, making it a perfect time to (re)subscribe to 4zzz to support community radio that centres these struggles for justice.
Anti-fascist, anti-war, anti-genocide and angry at the government news and events round up

Good morning Zedheads! Today on the show we have a few different bits and pieces, we spoke with Omar from Justice for Palestine Magan-djin about events this weekend, including the community upskilling workshop on Saturday 28th March, the Palm Sunday Rally (and the Great Ride for Return, alon on Sunday, ending at the rally, for you keen cyclists), and the upcoming weekend of action 17th-19th April against the Crisafulli Government's laws against pro-Palestinian speeche.

Sticking with the theme of "reasons we are mad at the government this week", we also spoke with Dr Kelly Bertolaccini from Griffith University about the Bill restricting e-bicycles and other e-mobility devices, the issues with the proposed laws and what it would actually take to make the streets safer for everyone.

And, finally, we'll also hear from Radio Reversers Anna and Jonno (and junior producer Sunny) about the 'No Phones, No Phascists' event this Friday arvo/evening in Holland Park West, and reflect on why community events like this, with live music, community announcements, zine projects, and food and tea to share, are important infrastructure in our fight against fascism in all its forms, on all the fronts we can get at.

Morning Zedpals, Han in the studio today with a bit of an info-heavy show today, but a super important one. Thanks to RR co-producer Roshan we've got recordings from last week's Justice for Palestine Magan-djin public meeting, which focussed on the new laws passed in Queensland and federal parliaments curtailing free speech. Legal experts Anna Ren and Roba Rayan detail what you need to know about these new laws and how to protect yourself, covering the banned phrases and symbols, police powers and criminalisation, cybersecurity, and in what circumstances you can reasonably defend use of these phrases.

This week on Radio Reversal's "Poetry in times of crisis" series, we are very excited to be bringing you an interview with Mununjahli poet Maria Van Neerven, to discuss her new poetry collection "Two Tongues." We chat to Maria about this collection, and consider some of the questions it asks about the role of language in colonial occupation and anti-colonial resistance. In the face of the ongoing attempts by the state government to prohibit political expression and prevent truth-telling in this moment, we consider the political imperative to make art, to write poetry, to refuse to be silenced.

Checking in on the far right - Interview with Tom Tanuki (thanks to 3CR Thursday brekky)

Over the past few months, we’ve been talking more about fascism as a political mood and public feeling, trying to understand contemporary expressions of facism and fascist organisations, how they’re normalised, how they’re organised, how they’re fed, how they interact with structures of settler colonialism.

I confess I hadn’t really thought much about the impact of laws like the ‘Combatting Antisemitism, Hate & Extremism’ on far right and fascist movements - when I saw the NSN had disbanded ahead of these laws coming in, my thinking went about as far as, "haha get wrecked". But there is, of course, more to it than that, and to help us think through this, this morning we are delighted to be bringing you an interview with Tom Tanuki, conducted by Alice from Thursday Brekky, a show on community radio station 3CR Radical Radio down in Naarm.

Tom Tanuki is a writer, satirist and anti-fascist activist, and does the deeply unpleasant but critically important work of keeping watch on the far right and neo-Nazis here in so-called australia - what these movements are like here, what feeds them, how they operate, and how we can intervene - as leftists and antifascists - to prevent and to address far-right radicalisation. If you don’t already, follow Tom’s work on YouTube or Facebook and on the Independent Australia journal/website.

In this interview, Tom and Alice discuss the recent legislative moves, across multiple levels of government, that represent restrictions on pro-Palestinian political speech. They also reflect on the disbanding of Nazi organisation the National Socialist Network, which occurred right before the Fed Gov ‘Combatting Antisemitism, hate & extremism’ bill became law. They reflect on how these laws ultimately fail to meaningfully intervene in curtailing far-right recruitment and mobilisation, fail to deradicalise these people, and may in fact be dangerous.

Huge thanks to our mates at 3CR Thursday Brekky for letting us re-broadcast this interview, we’re very grateful! If you don’t already, follow 3CR and Thursday Brekky on socials, they do a lot of great interviews and a lot of excellent coverage of current affairs.
