Today on Talking Zeds we'll be covering TEDxBrisbane 2026. We heard vox pops from members of the audience recorded at a community radio activation space (staffed by fabulous 4ZZZ and 4EB vollies, Maya, Bridget and Mack).
Heather (a speaker at this year's TEDxBrisbane) also interviews another speaker Kate Fisher. Kate is a health sociologist and global blood donation advocate. She is the founder of Milkshakes for Marleigh, a movement addressing critical blood shortages by amplifying the voices of blood recipients, and making visible the impact of anonymous donors.
In other words, Kate's a deadset legend!

Her doctoral thesis explored the negotiations of traumatic memory in English-language Kurdish writing as a way of understanding how the Kurdish people struggle for recognition and self-determination in and through diasporic cultural production.

    She was awarded the 2024 Fryer Library Fellowship and the 2025 John Oxley Library Fellowship, and is presenting on her research at the John Oxley library this Saturday at the State Library of Queensland.

    Heather caught up with Zhila last week. The timing of this interview is particularly signficant given the attacks across the Middle East at the moment, noting that Zhila's graduation visa is about to expire and she will soon need to leave Australia, despite it being unsafe for her to return to Iran.
